About the role

Own substantial backend work on a small Rails team — starting with the CRM layer that makes Liftify the system of record for customer relationships.

We’re past product-market fit, growing on real revenue, and small enough that what you ship hits production this quarter and matters to customers the next.

This is the fifth full-time hire on the Engineering team — the head of engineering (architect, still hands-on) plus a junior, a mid, and a senior engineer. We’re insourcing work currently done by contractors and growing toward a tight in-house team through 2026, so you’d be an early, high-leverage addition.

We’re hiring a senior backend engineer to take meaningful ownership of substantial product work, raise the bar on code review and mentorship across the team, and grow into broader technical leadership over time. There’s a clear path toward that, and we’d rather say so than hide it.

We’re not optimizing for “ten years of Rails.” We’re optimizing for engineers who think clearly across systems, products, and teams, and who pick up a stack quickly with the help of modern AI-assisted workflows. We use Claude Code and similar tools heavily and consider them part of how senior engineers work in 2026 — not a crutch.

What you’ll do

Own your first major project from day one: extending our campaign system into a full CRM layer, so Liftify becomes the system of record for customer relationships instead of a spoke connected to someone else’s CRM. It’s a multi-month build touching data modeling, external system synchronization, identity resolution, and real product surface area.
Pick up code review across the team within your first few weeks, and be the kind of senior presence that raises everyone’s work — including the head of engineering’s.
Influence architecture decisions within our established direction: Rails monolith, Postgres-first, Hotwire-native frontend.
Set the standard for code review and testing rigor.
Mentor our junior and mid engineers.
Take on infrastructure-adjacent work — Docker, CI, observability, and deployment.

What we’re looking for

Probably 8+ years of backend engineering experience, with a track record of shipping meaningful systems end to end. How you think matters more than the résumé.
You think in systems — you see second-order effects across code, team, product, and customer, and you can articulate the tradeoffs behind an “it depends.”
You think in tradeoffs, not dogma. Strong opinions, held loosely; context shapes the right call more than principle does.
You think about product. Engineering serves customers and the business, not the other way around.
You push back thoughtfully — disagreement is welcome, done well, in the right venue, with the team in mind rather than your own preferences.
You’re energized by team leverage over solo heroics. Mentorship, code review, and unblocking other engineers are first-class work, not chores between “real” tickets.

Tech stack

Backend: Ruby on Rails 7.2 with Hotwire, on PostgreSQL, with Redis/Valkey and Sidekiq.
Infrastructure: Docker on DigitalOcean, behind Cloudflare.
The direction we’re committed to: Rails monolith, Postgres-first, Hotwire-native frontend.
AI-assisted development: Claude Code and similar tools, used heavily and deliberately.

Location

Hybrid in Indianapolis — Mondays and Thursdays in-office at The Pyramids on the north side, the other three days flexible.
